Difficulty
Changing out your windshield wiper inserts is very easy and it saves money. I hate how the newer BMWs won't allow you to do this, but I guess it has to do with improving technology. It is a bit tedious and will take about 5 mintues, but I'd say anyone can do this DIY. BMW recommends you replace them about every 6 months, but I think you can determine when your wipers need replacing.
Tools Needed
Needle Nose Pliers (Not completely necessary but makes things easier in my opinion.
Parts Needed
BMW OEM Wiper Refill Driver's Side (BMW P# 61-61-7-010-247) $5
BMW OEM Wiper Refill Passenger's Side (BMW P# 61-61-7-010-248) $5
Instructions
Remove the old wiper
Old wipers with refills |
Remove the old wiper arms
1. Rotate the wiper blades around and push on the tab to release the wipers from the arm. This is hard to explain in words, but trust me it's really not that hard at all. If you happen to break a wiper blade clip, don't fret they're $5 (BMW P# 61-61-8-233-577). |
Conclusions
Easy, cheap, and good as new. Why buy a whole new set of blades? Yes, I agree that the arms themselves will eventually wear out, but until then I'll keep going this route as needed.
